How to Guess Strategically in the UCAT

How to Guess Strategically in the UCAT

18 hours ago by Chris

No matter how well you've prepared for the UCAT, there will be moments during the exam where you're stuck on a challenging question, running low on time, or both. What you do in those moments can make a real difference to your final score and it comes down to knowing how to guess well.

Guessing strategically is a legitimate and valuable skill, and this post will show you exactly how to do it.

Always Attempt Every Question

The UCAT has no negative marking. That means leaving a question blank is never the right move. A blank answer is a guaranteed zero, while even a random guess gives you a chance.

But we're not talking about random guessing. We're talking about educated guessing: using what's in front of you to give yourself the best possible odds.

Eliminate Before You Guess

When you're not sure of the correct answer, your first step should be to eliminate options you know (or strongly suspect) are wrong. The UCAT uses a four-option multiple choice format for most questions in each subtest, which means a blind guess gives you a 25% chance of answering correctly. Eliminate just one option and that jumps to 33%. Eliminate two and you're at 50%.

You don't need to be certain. You just need to be more right than wrong on average. Every option you can confidently rule out shifts the odds in your favour.

Know When to Guess

Knowing when to guess is just as important as knowing how. The key rule is simple: never leave a question blank, but also never let a single question drain your time.

The real risk with skipping questions is that you might intend to return to them later, but the UCAT's relentless pace means you often won't. If you've read a question and have no idea where to start, guess immediately and move on. If you've made some progress but are stuck between two options, apply your elimination strategy and then commit.

Knowing when to guess is an important skill that needs to be practiced. This will enable you to make quick guessing decisions under pressure, so that on exam day the choice to guess feels natural rather than stressful.

Guess Quickly and Move On

One of the biggest mistakes students make is spending too long deliberating over a guess. If you've spent more than your allocated time per question and you're still not sure, commit to your best guess and keep moving. Spending an extra 30 seconds on one uncertain question could cost you two or three questions later in the subtest.

A good guess made quickly is far more valuable than a perfect answer that eats up time you don't have.

Practise Guessing During Your Prep

Educated guessing is a skill, and like every UCAT skill, it improves with practice. When working through practice questions, pay attention to how you perform when you've narrowed it down to two options. Notice the patterns: which types of distractors catch you out, and which elimination strategies work best for you in each subtest.

You'll also develop a better feel for question difficulty over time, which makes your in-the-moment guessing decisions faster and more accurate on exam day.

Make the Most of Every Question

Guessing well won't make up for a lack of preparation, but it can absolutely be the difference between a good score and a great one. Students who have practised their guessing strategies go into the exam with one less thing to worry about when the pressure is on.

Smart, strategic guessing isn't cheating. It's part ofthe exam, and mastering it is just one of many skills covered in MedEntry’s UCAT courses.
