Ace Your Medical School Interview: MedEntry's New Video Interview Curriculum

So you've completed the UCAT, congratulations! The next critical step is the interview, which thousands of students will face in the coming months. Interviews are perhaps the most under-recognised, yet critically important, part of the medical entry process. In some cases they are more important than your academic grades and UCAT score in determining entry into medicine.

What Are Medical School Interviews?

Medical school interviews are a way for universities to assess skills that are not able to be assessed with other criteria such as the UCAT and interviews. These include communication skills, professionalism, empathy, ethical reasoning and decision making.

Interviews are often weighted heavily in university selection criteria. Some courses, for example Bond Medicine or Charles Sturt Dentistry, only consider interview performance when deciding on final offers.

Interviews come in various formats: Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs), traditional panel interviews, and virtual interviews. Each format presents unique challenges.

Why Interview Preparation Matters

Interview season can bring about considerable stress and anxiety for many students. A poor interview performance often means waiting another full year to reapply. Some universities, such as Monash, will not even allow interview re-sits: that is, if you perform poorly in an interview, the same interview score will be used if you reapply the following year.

This pressure causes students to fall into common traps: over-rehearsed responses, failure to demonstrate key skills, or offering superficial, bland responses.

Many students do not prepare for interviews, thinking they will ‘wing it’ or that the interview is ‘just a chat’. Unfortunately nothing can be further from the truth. Interviews are meticulously designed assessments that are extremely challenging, even for those who have excelled in the UCAT and school or university.

How Can You Prepare Effectively for Medical Interviews?

Successful interview preparation requires three fundamental steps: learning from a comprehensive curriculum, practicing in simulated settings, and working with specific questions you'll face at your university interview.

Generic interview advice isn't enough. You need targeted preparation for medical school interviews, so you know what to expect, and how to convey your best self to the interviewers.
